His mouth is sweetness itself; he is desirable in every way. Such . . . is my lover, my friend.(Song of Songs 5:16)
A close friend and mentor once told me with a twinkle in her eye of the plans her husband had made for their Valentine’s Day. Chocolates and a trail of rose petals through their house brought her to his invitation: a romantic evening of dinner and dancing. They had been through many hard times in their fifty-year marriage, but their love and romance had not faded. She said that their love had sustained them despite the stresses of life because they were mutually committed to expressing their love each day.
On this day for remembering those we love deeply, give something beyond a card. Just as Solomon’s wife communicated her love to her spouse in the Song of Songs, we should give our loved ones our deep love and appreciation. Have you expressed how much you love them? Have you put words to the cute little pleasures of marriage—such as the way he smiles?
Slow down and go out of your way to show all your loved ones how important they are to you. Keep saying “I love you.” Your relationships will be richer for it.
Express love and appreciation each day.
