After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lordwas not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was a sound of a gentle whisper. (1 Kings 19:11-12)
A million things compete for our attention. To listen and really hear, we need to swim out of the world’s noisy ocean and take a quiet moment on the sand.
Our all-powerful God does not choose to shout in an earthquake, a fire, or the wind. He does not demand our attention above the roar of life. God waits until he has our attention and comes alongside us when we are still enough to hear his gentle whisper.
To hear God’s voice, we need to quiet our hearts. God delights in speaking with a heart humble enough to be still and to listen to him.
We hear God’s gentle whispers of love in the beauty of creation. Soft puffy clouds glide through a blue sea of sky. Children spill across the backyard. A friend offers a listening ear. A family laughs together. The sun rises on a brand new day.
God speaks his love all around us; to perceive it, we must listen.
Listen to God’s gentle whisper.
