Only Dust

The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. (Psalm 103:13-14)

I was very young when I started taking piano lessons, and in grade school I began to play the viola, a great match for my long fingers. I quickly learned the difficulty of playing stringed instruments. The piano always hits a note at the right pitch, but how a stringed instrument sounds is completely dependent on where the finger is placed. The pitch of each note is very hard to get in tune, and normally sounds a little screechy. Practice helps tremendously, but it probably never makes perfect.

In life, we try to hit the right pitch and make a pleasing sound with our lives. Though practice doesn’t make life perfect, God delights in our best efforts as we learn, grow, and become more of who he made us to be. He remembers that he made humans out of dust.

God hears our screechy attempts at living; he knows that we are beginners, and he loves us, just the same. Be your best today, knowing that God accepts you for who you are.

God doesn’t expect perfection.
