Loving When It’s Hard
Imitate God . . . in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. (Ephesians 5:1-2)
Do you remember the last time you settled into a cozy corner with a page-turner for the last ten minutes of your lunch break, to unwind after a hectic morning? Did your new co-worker interrupt you with one more question about a procedure she still didn’t understand?
Showing mercy when we don’t feel like it is a very hard thing to do. In theory, we love to help others, but when love goes beyond our comfort zone into self-sacrifice, it is very difficult.
In Ephesians 5, we are told to use Christ’s life as a pattern for our own. Jesus always had someone waiting and wanting more from him. In Matthew 15, we see the disciples shooing away a persistent woman. Instead of seeming put out, Jesus heaped on a double dose of compassion and helped her with her need.
Like Jesus, we can give of ourselves even when it is inconvenient, especially to our loved ones. Extending a bit more care to meet someone’s need can make their day.
Shine a little love on others.
