The disciples . . . woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and the waves, and suddenly all was calm. (Matthew 8:25-26)
From our own forgetfulness, and from watching the parents in “Home Alone” forget their child when they went on vacation, it is easy to think that God may also overlook his responsibilities—such as caring for our lives. The endless search for a new job, the longing to conceive a baby, continued physical ailments—all raise questions. Where is God? How long will I have to suffer? Has God forgotten me?
The disciples were caught in a violent storm as they crossed the Sea of Galilee. Jesus was sleeping, and the disciples wondered why he wasn’t concerned, as they were. When they cried out, “Lord, save us!” Jesus answered, “Why are you afraid?” Although the storm was raging and they felt that they would die, God had not abandoned them and would not let them drown.
Nor will God let us drown in the midst of our storms. He will calm the wind and the waves in our lives when we trust him.
God is with us in life’s storms.
