The Cheap Substitute

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)

One winter, I bought a lovely outdoor fountain for a great price. Come spring, the fountain looked and sounded beautiful in our garden—I loved it! As the days passed, however, the pump slowed and the powder-coated finish chipped. Within weeks, the fountain did not work at all. What a disappointment!

In life, we look for meaning in much the same way that we spend our money. We take the least expensive route and hope to get the best things. We hope that cheap emotional substitutes will fill the enormous chasm in our hearts. We believe that working harder, acquiring more things, filling our days, and sedating our deep needs will quiet our longings. After a time, we realize that we are not finding satisfaction; only God fulfills our desire for real purpose.

God doesn’t wear out, fade away, quit working, or become a burden. Cheap substitutes may make us happy for a while, but in the end they disappoint. True fulfillment of our deepest longings comes only from the stability of God’s love.

Hebrews tells us that Jesus Christ is unchanging. We can find lasting significance and joy in knowing that Jesus’ love will never end.

God’s love never changes.
